In class assignment

The issue is whether or not Barbie dolls have a positive of negative affect on a little girls. The exigence is that some women feel that Barbie dolls gives girls poor body image because her body type is practically unattainable. These people also feel that barbie is portrayed as a girl interested in only material things. The intended audience is for women who have children or women who grew up playing with Barbie dolls. The text is an exploratory essay written by a 20 year old women who actually used to play with Barbies as a child. The audience would be contained based on their own personal beliefs and she mentions these different beliefs in her essay. The first position on this issue is people are are against Barbie and what she stands for. These people are part of a feminist protest and feel like Barbie's body image and personality gives children poor self esteem later in life. The second position claims that playing with Barbie dolls is just a part of a girls life and imagination. They also see her as a positive role model because she has been made into many different and powerful positions such as an astrounaut. The third position is in the middle of these two and agrees that her body image is extreme but that she is a good creative tool for children. The author seems to favor the moderate position because she does not feel that she blames how she looks on a Barbie doll but rather society does this in order to make Barbie the scapegoat. She acknowledges that there are both good and bad sides to the Barbie doll.
